Authorities are urging public action on this issue, advising households should run a tap for at least 30 seconds every morning and after extended periods of non-use, prior to consuming or cooking in tap water. But is this a good long-term solution for all Australians?
How Is Lead Introduced Into Drinking Water
Lead is a heavy metal that is denser than most common materials and is found in many household plumbing fixtures containing brass, such as taps and pipes.
Any plumbing containing lead can leach lead into the water, especially when hot water is used. Lead is also more likely to leach into the water when pipes corrode, particularly if the water is high in acid (such as rain water) or low in mineral content, which can corrode pipes and fixtures easily.
Why Is Lead Exposure A Health Concern
Lead exposure over a period of months or years can result in lead poisoning. Adults can experience reproductive issues, damage to the kidneys and abdomen, neurological changes, fatigue, anaemia and high blood pressure. According to Health Line, children and foetus’s exposed to lead can develop intellectual disabilities with symptoms including behavioural problems, low IQ, hearing problems and learning difficulties.
Lead poisoning from high doses of lead can result in emergency symptoms such as vomiting, seizures, coma and muscle weakness.

How Can You Remove Lead From Your Water Supply
