Why should I filter my water?
There are numerous benefits to drinking filtered water.
A water filter limits you and your family’s exposure to a wide range of natural and synthetic contaminants that may remain in drinking water.
An activated carbon filter removes microorganisms, sediment, taste and odour, contaminants including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as chlorine used in the water disinfection process, pesticides and petroleum, as well as natural occurring chemical compounds. What still remains though, are all the healthy minerals in your water that may enhance your health.
Drinking filtered water is also an environmentally friendly option for drinking good quality water as it reduces the use of single-use plastic bottles which ultimately reduces landfill and waste in our waterways.
There are also economic benefits to drinking filtered water, you will save money on bottled water. And lastly, you will also enjoy drinking healthy, great tasting water every day from your own tap.
Why should I purify my water?
Purifying your water provides you with the highest level of contaminant removal from your water.
Purified water can be achieved through a number of purification processes, the most popular being reverse osmosis.
Drinking purified water will protect you and your family being exposed to undesired chemical compounds, organic and inorganic materials, and biological contaminants.
In particular reverse osmosis will filter drinking water down to 0.0005 of a micron, fine enough to remove most viruses, bacteria and parasites. The process also removes total dissolved solids (TDS) such as most heavy molecule chemicals like fluoride, herbicides and pesticides, as well as nitrates, sodium and heavy metals.
Like filtered water, drinking purified water saves you money on bottled water and provides you and your family with healthy, pure, great tasting water.
While the reverse osmosis process is great for removing potentially harmful contaminants, healthy minerals and salts can also be removed and leave your water acidic. For great potential health benefits (such as improved gut and kidney health), you can raise your water’s pH balance to a level considered alkaline by adding healthy minerals back to your water with a Remineraliser cartridge.
What is the difference between filtering and purifying water?
The difference between filtering and purifying water is the level of contaminant removal achieved by either process.
Activated carbon filtration is most effective at removing or reducing impurities and contaminants such as chlorine, sediment, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), poor taste and odour from your tap water.
The reverse osmosis purification process effectively removes most viruses, bacteria, and parasites in addition to total dissolved solids (TDS), heavy metals, fluoride, herbicides, pesticides, odour and poor taste, thanks to the high quality membrane used in the reverse osmosis process.
How long does the Hi-Tech Optimiser cartridge last?
Multipure, the manufacturer of the Hi-Tech Optimiser (HTO) cartridge recommends replacement every 12 months, or usage of 1892 litres - whichever comes first. More frequent replacement may be necessary in some areas depending on water quality.
Does the Hi-Tech Optimiser cartridge remove the good minerals from the water?
No, the Hi-Tech Optimiser (HTO) cartridge leaves all the healthy minerals in the water. Natural minerals such as calcium, magnesium and potassium are completely dissolved in the water and are not removed by the cartridge filtration process.
Can I continue to use my filter cartridge past the 12 month expiry date?
During their recommended lifespan, cartridges effectively retain the contaminants from water as it filters through them. Cartridges can become ‘full’ of contaminants after their recommended lifespan, reaching capacity and unable to filter your water. This can often result in unpleasant taste and odour from your water.
Additionally, your cartridge’s ability to effectively remove contaminants after the specified time frame will be significantly reduced. Contaminants in your tap water (such as chlorine, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), bacteria and heavy metals) may not be filtered after the cartridge’s capacity is reached (e.g. 1892 litres for the Hi-Tech Optimiser) and the quality of your water may be compromised.
As cartridges become ‘full’ of contaminants filtered from your water, they may also become blocked and unable to allow water to readily pass through them. This can often result in a noticeable and irritating reduction in your water’s flow rate.
Cartridges also sit inside your water filter’s housing, filtering and retaining contaminants (such as chemicals, heavy metals, sediment and bacteria) from your tap water. The dark, wet and warm conditions inside the water filter housing combined with the build-up of filtered contaminants, create a perfect bacteria growth area. Using the cartridge past the specified date can cause bacteria to re-contaminate the cartridge and even be reintroduced into your drinking water. This bacterial build-up is called biofilm and appears as a clear, glue-like substance around your cartridge. Unfortunately, you cannot usually taste or smell this build-up, and therefore might be unknowingly consuming water that has been in contact with biofilm. Click here to learn more.
What if I didn’t use the system for a substantial amount of the 12 month time frame?
Unfortunately, if the cartridge has still been sitting in the system (dark, wet and sometimes warm conditions) it is still not recommended to use it past the recommended time frame due to the build-up of Biofilm. We recommend taking the cartridge out of the system and letting it dry out completely in the sun before going away, this way when you return it will last you that little bit longer. Does the Bench Top Water Filter need to be installed by a plumber?
No. The system comes with a chrome plated diverter which connects directly to most standard kitchen taps and easy to follow instructions. Installation takes approximately 2 minutes.
Can I still use my hot water with the Bench Top Water Filter connected?
Absolutely - you can use your tap as you normally would for dishes, cleaning up etc. When you wish to filter your water you simply flick the black lever on your diverter and your water will come out of your water filter tap, fresh, clean and chemical free. Please note however, that it is not recommended to run hot water through your water filter system due to the carbon make-up of the cartridge itself. It will not only cause the carbon to expand, the carbon will lose its ability to absorb chemicals. Hot water can also have an adverse effect on the bonding agents used in the end caps of the cartridge.
Where can the Bench Top Water Filter be connected?
The Bench Top Water Filter can be connected to any standard, working tap. Different taps have different threads, in some cases you may need a different adaptor to accommodate the tap or faucet you are connecting the system to.
We have a full range of tap adaptors available with full easy to follow installation instructions.
How do I remove fluoride from my drinking water?
Whilst some chemicals can be removed through filtration systems, fluoride proves to be a more difficult chemical to remove.
Some carbon filter cartridges on the market claim to remove fluoride, however this is not always accurate. It’s important to make sure any claims are backed up with performance proof and official test results for effective fluoride removal over a substantial period of time.
Alumina based filter cartridges have proven to be effective at removing fluoride, however the reduction rate is only around 80%. The capacity of alumina based filter cartridges is also very low which means the filter requires changing more frequently, making these systems more expensive to maintain.
One of the most effective ways to remove fluoride from your tap water is with a reverse osmosis system which has an achievable reduction rate of 93.6%. A reverse osmosis system will also remove other impurities in your water including chlorine, and will also remove unpleasant taste and odour from your tap water.
In addition to fluoride, what other contaminants does reverse osmosis remove?
Reverse osmosis is one of the most advanced and effective household water purification methods available. Before tap water reaches the reverse osmosis membrane, the water passes through a carbon cartridge removing chlorine and sediment.
The reverse osmosis membrane reduces the following contaminants to the following percentages:
Fluoride 93.6%, Arsenic 88.0%, Hexavalent chromium 96.4%, Trivalent chromium 98.2%, Barium 96.3%, Selenium 97.9%, Total dissolved solids (TDS) reduction 90.8%, Cadmium 99.1%, Copper 98.5%, Turbidity 99.1%, Nitrate 86%, Nitrite 87%, Lead 98.6%.
My system has a GAC cartridge. How often do I need to change it?
Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) cartridges should be changed every 6 months. The cartridge is designed to assist with the reduction of sediment and disinfection products such as chlorine and chloramines, and any associated unpleasant taste and odour. Not changing the cartridge at 6 months will risk the contaminants it has removed from your water over that time frame being added back into your water.
